Solar plant in Emden/North Germany supplies electricity for more than 1,000 households with solar current out of 15,000 PV modules –construction of 3.75 Megawatt power plant was executed under difficult conditions
Emden – “If you find a drainage ditch in the area, where you want to build a solar plant, you already know what you are engaging yourself in” says Jörg Frühauf with a laugh. His solar company “F&S solar” in Euskirchen leaves a big impression on the former barracks complex close to Emden in two ways. The solar plant which is being built these days comes with impressive figures: On a surface of approx. 8 hectares, 15,000 PV modules will produce a peak performance of 3,750 kW, and due to the circumstances, the F&S workers had to take care not to leave too big footprints on this area: The work had to be done on really muddy ground, as Uwe Czypiorski, CTO of F&S solar told us.
“The weather conditions were hard, due to heavy rain the ground was extremely softened. Therefore we had to act very carefully on the surface and could not use the same traces twice” says Uwe Czypiorski. Although after the new greening of the area nothing of these traces will be seen any longer. Through the expected 3,692,765 kWh of clean solar current, 2,548 tons of the climate killer carbon dioxide can be saved. With the green current produced there, 1,055 households can be supplied with solar energy.
The direction of the solar modules as well as the height of the construction below were especially designed for this solar plant. “Through this measure we are able to increase even the revenue predicted by independent institutes” says CTO Uwe Czypiorski. The installation is certified by independent authorities and approved by TÜV.
More than 110 kilometres of cable for the module wiring had to be installed and pulled, plus 9 kilometres of cable for the main power connection. The works were not only done with own assemblers, but also, as Uwe Czypiorski says, with “resident installers. And I can only praise the good cooperation with local Authorities and the Energy Suppliers of Emden”.
The location has a real good solar irradiation, and the area lies close to the highway. As soon as the solar plant is ready, it will be monitored 24 hours a day by F&S solar at its headquarters in Euskirchen. epa

Apart from waste of the Second World War, metal scrap from post-war times and ore-bearing rocks, also the weather represented special challenges in building this solar plant.
Anklam – The German air pioneer Otto Lilienthal would have had fund: In front of the gates of his place of birth, in Anklam in the North-East of Germany the solar specialist F&S solar from Euskirchen in Northrhine-Westfalia is building a top modern solar plant with a peak power of 7,900 Kilowatt. More then 32,000 top-quality modules are being used on a non-shadowed area close to the Anklam airfield, which nowadays also serves as Otto-Lilienthal-Museum. Here, one also finds the Aeronauticon, an educational and adventure garden, where kids are made familiar in a playful way with science and techniques.
On account of the airfield we had to get a blend- and a fire prevention certificate, so that it could be made sure that there will be no interferences from solar park for the air traffic“, reports the Chief Technical Officer of „F&S solar“, Uwe Czypiorski. However, the certificates were only the smaller problem, because the airfield already existed during the Second World War, and it was taken under hard bombardment by the allies. Consequently adjoining surfaces also showed a high ordnance load.
“The whole surface had to be sounded out“, according to Uwe Czypiorski. The site concerned was finally cleared from old loads by the ordnance clearance from Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Czypiorski: „Another problem was that the people have disposed a lot of scrap metal in the bomb craters after the Second World War. The metal detector also found this kind of waste of course.“
What, however, nobody had counted on: There were also numerous ore-bearing stones which were found by the metal detector. „We had to sound out the ground very deeply and condense afterwards again in layers to guarantee the stability for the substructure of the solar park.“
And again this: While the whole of Germany experienced a relatively mild winter, just in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania they had a longer frost period partly with two-digit minus degrees which delayed the works.
Finally, in safe distance we marched behind the ordnance clearance and have mounted the sub-construction of galvanised steel and aluminium“, according to Czypiorski. However, in spite of all adversities the CTO is satisfied with the basic schedule: „We have begun in the middle of January with the construction works and could realize the technical power connection by the end of February. Already during the construction phase an investor who will take over the solar park was found. „Currently we are still occupied to connect the solar park to the main grid point two kilometres away“, according to Czypiorski. Then the solar park will save yearly 5,500 tonnes CO2 and deliver purely clean current for 2,256 households.

Lake-Islands for Solar Park

See eagle gets two swimming islands as compensational areas for the photovoltaic installation in Winsen – more than 15,000 modules will produce nearly 3.5 Mio kilowatt-hours of green energy per year in future.
Winsen (Luhe) - The fact that solar parks make sense not only with regard to the climate, but that their construction may also be to the interests of animals can be seen in Winsen (Luhe). The solar specialist coming from the North Rhine-Westphalian Euskirchen „F&S solar“ has established a big power station on a former sheep paddock with 15.042 solar modules. Boris Kapschefsky, project manager at „F&S solar“: „The area could not be used for anything else, and the special thing is that now the sheep can graze on the surface again, because between the rows and under the modules the solar park is covered with grass.“
Thus the shepherd with his herd is able to take care of the cleaning and gardening of this area. „The sea eagle which lives very close was given two swimming islands on a nearby lake as compensational space“, according to Kapschefsky. Since the modules provide their energetic service silently and without moving parts, there will be no danger for the the bird.
Also small animals will still be able to get onto the surface: The surrounding fence was mounted to make it easy for rabbits to slip under it. However, the main purpose remains the production of current without carbon dioxide output: With a peak performance of 3,610 kilowatts the solar park should produce 3.429.576-kilowatt hours of clean current per year in Winsen. Thus 980 households can be supplied with solar current, compared with conventional coal-based current, 2.366 tons of the "climate killer" carbon dioxide are saved per year.
Through the high solar irradiation in the Lüneburger Heide the solar park is not only ecologically, but also financially lucrative. „The useful life is guaranteed for at least 20 years, however, we know that also terms of 30 years are possible“, says the „F&S solar“project manager. After its lifetime, the whole park is completely recycleable. More than 127 kilometres of cable were necessary only for the module wiring, for the main line the assemblers rolled out once again ca. 15 kilometres of cable.

Volker Miesseler, Manager of the public utilities Bergheim, opened the solar power station close to the A61, which was built by the Euskirchen solar specialist „F&S solar“ under complicated conditions - 6,900 solar modules with 1.690-kilowatt peak will generate more than 1.5 million kilowatt hours of green current per year for the public utilities of Bergheim in future
Bergheim - „Six weeks ago sugar beets still stood on this field“, Volker Miesseler, Manager of the public utilities Bergheim said at the inauguration of the solar park Zieverich close to Bergheim. The PV plant was opened on a Friday, 13th, which was only positive says Volker Miesseler: „I married on a Friday, 13th – and the marriage already holds for 20 years!“
The solar power station with 6,900 solar modules built by the Euskirchen solar specialist „F&S solar“ should generate 1.605.975 kilowatt hours of clean solar current for more than two decades: The peak performance will be 1,690 kilowatts per year in future – without carbon dioxide output or consequential costs for storage of dangerous materials.
However, the construction itself was difficult with regard to the weather and the muddy ground on the field, as Boris Kapschefsky, project manager of F&S reported: „It was very slushy, and there were lanes of up to 30 centimeters produced by the harvesting machines.“
A crane could not be used to set up the heavy transformer station, even a real cross-country Unimog got to its borders. Moreover, the storage space was very restricted: „We have virtually unloaded directly from the street and started mounting immediately.“
Maria Pfordt, Mayor of the capital town Bergheim, said: „I would not have liked worked under such circumstances and I am even more glad to finish this innovative project on time!“
Volker Miesseler: „F&S has established the solar installation in only five weeks and thus early enough before the next reduction step of the energy law EEG. On 29th of November we could report the technical operation.“ Not only the principal public utilities of Bergheim should profit from the current, but also directly the citizens themselves Miesseler said.
Next year the public utilities want to work out a concept, to make the citizens participate in the solar park and profit also financially. Miesseler: „I fancy an easy solution by which the citizens can already take part with little money.“ Moreover, one wants to allow resident businessman to cover the solar park current – then this would be the entrance in the direct marketing according to the motto „energy – from Bergheim for Bergheim“.
Only 50 kilometres of cable were necessary for the construction of the solar power station on the 2.8-hectare-surface for the module connections, in addition 1.2 kilometres of cable for the main line were used as Kapschefsky of „F&S solar“ said. The solar park Zieverich is calculated with a term of at least 25 years. The solar modules coming from German production are recyclable afterwards.
459 households can be supplied with clean solar current by the new solar park by which more than 1100 tons of carbon dioxide are saved per year compared to conventional energy resources .
